Ultra High-Density Plantation (UHDP) in India: Current Status, Opportunities, and Future Prospects

Abstract

The horticulture sector plays a crucial role in Indian agriculture by contributing to nutritional security, employment generation, and economic development. However, increasing population pressure, shrinking landholdings, and climate-related challenges have necessitated the adoption of innovative cultivation systems capable of enhancing productivity while ensuring sustainability. Ultra High-Density Plantation (UHDP) has emerged as a promising orchard management strategy that combines increased planting density with scientific canopy management, drip irrigation, fertigation, and crop regulation practices. Initially developed for mango cultivation, UHDP has subsequently been adopted in guava, pomegranate, apple, citrus, and several other fruit crops. The technology facilitates early fruiting, higher productivity per unit area, efficient resource utilization, and improved economic returns. This review summarizes the principles, technological components, achievements, challenges, and future prospects of UHDP in India, with particular emphasis on its application in major fruit crops.
