Abstract

Agroforestry a new term, coined in 1977 is an age-old practice. It has basically two important roies of production and service. Tree is the dominant pariner in all the agroforestry system. Selection of trees and their management is essential for its success. Multipurpose trees species with greater preference on nitrogen fixing tress are essential tree components for the various agroforestry system. Studies carried out at Jhansi revealed that Hardwickia binata an multipurpose tree species capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen and Zizyphus mauritiana among the fruit trees the most ideal tree components for the success of the various agroforestry systems in the semi arid conditions. In the present paper various success stories are detailed to highlight the recent developments in the field of agroforestry system research.
