Combining ability for yield and its contributing characters in Okra [Aelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench]

Abstract

The experiment was conducted with 45 F1s developed through diallel techique excluding reciprocals along with 10 parents viz., Azad Bhindi-2, Azad Bhindi-1 (Azad Ganga), KS-305 (Red), Parbhani Kranti, KS-312, Arka Anamika, Pusa Sawani, BO-2, P-7 and VRO-6 in Randomized block design with three replications. The study revealed that the significant general combining ability effect were shown by parent AB-2, AB-1, P-7 and Arka Anamika. Number of fruits per plant have positive effect in yield per plant, gca effect for number of fruits per plant ranged from -1.16 to 2.61 in Pusa Sawani and AB-2 respectively. On the basis of specific combining ability seven superior heterotic crosses were selected for yield and related traits these crosses in order of merit were 18.34 (Arka Anamika x Pisa Sawani), 18.25 (P-7 x VRO-6), 13.52 (AB-2 x Prabhani Kranti), 13.06 (AB-2 x KS-305), 11.85 (AB-1 x Pusa Sawani), 10.40 (AB-2 x KS-312) and 10.17 (KS-312 x Pusa Sawani).
