Combining ability and gene action for biochemical parameters and grain yield in quality protein maize (Zea mays L.)

Abstract

Combining ability analysis was done using 45 F1 hybrids and their Parents obtained from a diallel mating design for 5 biochemical parameters ana Grain yield. Both general and specific combining ability variances were highly significant for almost all the characters. Based on gca effects the parents QPM10-2(P5) and PK (C103ae x B 73ae) B-3-6(P2) for grain yield, TQPM 34-1(P4), P5 and QPM 35-1(P9) for protein content, P4, P2 and TQPM 178-1(P1) for tryptophan content and P4, P1 and DMR 274-1 (P8) for oil content are good general combiners while the crosses Viz., P4x P6 (TQPM 42-1), P1x P10 (QPM 89E-1), P4 x P5 for grain yield, P4x P8, P5X P10, P7 (TQPM 80-1) x P9 for protein content, P1x P10, P1 x P3(QPM 46-3), P4x P6 for tryptophan content and P1x P8, P4 X P6 and P2x P10 for oil content are the best specific combiners. Hence these crosses could be advanced further for isolation of transgressive segregants and also to develop good inbred lines.
