Genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for different yield contributing characters were studied in fifty germplasm of black gram. The study indicated existence of considerable amount of variability for all the characters studied except pod length, no. of seeds/pod, 100. seed weight and protein content. The yield/plant exhibited highest values of genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation (GCV and PCV). High estimates of heritability (broad sense), genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) and genetic advance was observed for no. of branches/plant, no. of clusters/plant, no. of pods/plant and yield/plant. These characters can be effectively improved through selection.
