Abstract

Farming systems of households as prevailing in western U.P. have been analyzed based on a sample of 197 farmers. It was found that the sugarcane based farming systems were predominant in the study area. Live stock, vegetable, cereal and sugarcane were the main source of farm income. The family size was largest (9.19) in sugarcane based farming systems. No family members was professionally qualified in the sample as a whole. Educational index was highest for sugarcane based farming systems. The study indicates that cross-bred breeding programme has not made any marked headway in the area. The cropping intensity was highest (218 per cent) in vegetable based farming system. The credit requirement of about 86 per cent farmers were fulfilled by institutional sources. Vegetable based farming system provides highest employment (572 man days/farm/year). Income per hectare was not sufficient to provide household security which Includes expenditure on food, education, health, housing etc. Fragmentation and subdivision of land holding, scarcities of labour, low yield of local seeds, less reliable market in context of changing global market, scarcity of owned fund exogenous factors like, dependence of natural resources, global warming, non availability of good quality seeds (variety and breeds) and sheds for animals, poultry etc. were found major constraints In following Integrated farming system.
