Abstract

Sugarcane and wheat productivity, yield gaps and constraints in the adoption of improved technology were studied in Upper Gangatlc plain zone of Uttar Pradesh. Saharanpur and eulandshahar districts having high productivity of sugar cane and wheat respectively were purposely selected for the study purpose. Two blocks from each district, two villages from each block and 15 farmers (5 each small, medium and large) in each village considering 120 respondents were selected randomly. Information on soclo-personnel characteristics of respondents, knowledge level, technology wise gap of each respondent and constraints responsible for adoption of sugar cane and wheat technology were obtained through personal interview conducted during 2005–06. Sugarcane being the highly profitable crop In the state, the productivity was almost stagnate or meagerly increased during the last ten years. The contribution of the acreage in production was greater than the productivity. Although productivity showed an slight increasing trend, a wide gap existed between potential yield and actual yield. The existence of wide yield gaps indicated constraints in the adoption of improved production protection technologies.
