A comparative analysis of socio-economic status of elected representatives of PRI’s in Haryana

In India, the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act is considered as a landmark in the reforms of Panchayati Raj Institutions. The Act has provided an opportunity to various groups of the society especially deprived sections of the society to participate in the grassroot level decision-making process. Recently in 2015, Haryana Government has amended the Panchayati Raj Act and some educational criteria, control open defecation in a rural area, deflators of the cooperative society loans are restricted, etc., have been added in the existing act. In the light of amendment act 2015, the aim of this article is to analyse the socio-economic status of elected representatives in Panchayati Raj Institutions of Haryana through empirical evidence. The empirical study has been conducted in two districts, that is, Kurukshetra and Ambala of the Haryana state and evaluated the sample of 145 females and 192 males (total 337 members) of all three tiers of Panchayati Raj institutions PRI of both districts. The article has mainly divided into three sections: first section is related to background of PRIs in Haryana; the second section of article is about Haryana Panchayati Raj Amendment Act, 2015, empirical study in two districts, objectives of the study, methodology, data analysis and interpretation and findings of the study and the third section is about conclusion and outcomes of the study.
