Municipalities play a significant role in the development of towns and cities, providing essential amenities to the residents. The competence and leadership abilities of elected councillors directly influence the efficiency of the municipality. Without the elected councillors fulfilling their roles and responsibilities, achieving the goals of urban local self-government bodies become challenging. This research paper aims to examine the impact of leadership on the sustainable development of urban areas and assess the awareness levels among elected councillors regarding their roles. The paper also proposes measures to enhance leadership qualities, emphasizing the recognition of the importance of councillors roles and participation in the municipality’s working system for urban development.
