E-governance is a vital tool to facilitate the participation of citizens in governance. It has tremendous potential to change the existing relationship between citizen and government by treating the citizen as an important stakeholder. It has revolutionised the delivery of service from focus on administration to customer driven one. Information and communications technologies (ICTs)-driven government has significantly reduced corruption and enhanced quality of services. It aims at providing responsive governance and greater involvement of citizens in policy-related processes. The author has analysed many empirical studies of various states to demonstrate the role of e-governance in promoting transparency and accountability in public governance.
