Increasing urbanization and consequent challenges have led the world community to make clarion call for sustainable urban development. Sustainable urban development signifies attainment of equilibrium between urban development and environmental protection with due regards to equal access in employment, shelter, basic services, social infrastructure and transportation in the urban areas. It is not merely a technical activity of local authorities but it also includes their continuous interaction with the citizens, which is one of the most essential pre-requisites for sustainable urban development. Positive relationship between citizen participation and sustainable urban development has been reflected in various studies. It is this context the paper has been conceived. Based on both primary and secondary data, the paper throws light on mechanisms and level of citizens participation in the tri-city area constituting of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali and concludes by making relevant suggestions.
