Abstract

Jharkhand, a rich state of India with an abundance of minerals, has a high rate of poverty and backwardness. About 40% of the population of the state is formed by the schedule caste and schedule tribe. The state has one of the highest rates of poverty and ranks bottom section in almost all the human development indicators. The reasons for the backwardness of the state lie in political instability, corruption, low human development and policy failure of the state. Expropriation in terms of land acquisition and displacement, low expenditure on human development infrastructure and corruption are the main hindrance.
