Abstract

India demographic profile, 2013, describes that the population of senior citizens will be reached 323 million by 2050. Thus, ageing is an emerging phenomenon in India. In traditional society, senior citizens got socioeconomic and psychological support. But the socio-economic transformation in modern society has leaded to several changes in their living conditions. The problem of taking care of senior citizens has been increasing as youth is busy in earning livelihood to foster their families. Consequently, senior citizens are losing their social life and social security. Although, there is ‘Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizen Act 2007’ that provides guaranteed protection to the senior citizens of India. Yet, the senior citizens have to face some kind of problems such as feeling of loneliness, lack of finance, health issues, etc. By keeping this view in the mind, the present study has been conducted to know that what kinds of problems senior citizens face. Therefore, total 404 respondents have been studied who live within family and at old age homes of Haryana state. It was found that majority of the respondents feel loneliness and do not get medical treatment in the absence of finance. Moreover, they face joint pain and eye related problems.
