Caste still has an important bearing in the minds of people, influencing most of the institutional structures and functions of the Indian political system. Though there is a gradual erosion in its rigidity that was attached in the field of social interactions among individuals, especially in the case of purity-pollution, its influence has enormously increased with renewed vigor and intentions in the political sphere. Caste plays a determining role in the elections at all levels and the working of the democratic polity in India. Party politics and elections provide caste groups an opportunity to be involved in and understand the nature, organization, and working of political parties, interest groups, other structures, and their functions. The operations of democratic politics have produced a highly segmented society on the basis of caste, class, and religion, etc. The present study attempts to understand the dual influence of party politics and mass media on caste groups, with special reference to Pantis of Cahar. As the primary task of media is to ensure connectedness and communication, it also has a profound influence in shaping opinions, disseminating information, and influencing cultural norms.
