Abstract

This paper attempts to understand the theoretical foundations of democracy and democratisation. This involves a thorough analysis of what constitutes democracy, different perspectives on democracy. It looks at the difference between democracy, democratisation and democratic consolidation. This paper also deals with factors and prerequisites of democratisation along with an understanding of waves of democracy. Does democracy entails the same meaning across countries or does it change with socio-cultural, historical and political backgrounds are also examined. Finally what is measuring democratisation and classification of democracies is also undertaken.
