Abstract

India’s foreign policy is undergoing a significant transformation, blending its rich civilizational heritage with contemporary strategic imperatives to establish itself as a proactive global leader in a multipolar world. Rooted in timeless principles like Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, India leverages its cultural diplomacy through soft power assets such as Yoga, Ayurveda, and a vibrant diaspora to enhance its global influence. Moving beyond Nehruvian non-alignment, India has adopted a pragmatic multi-alignment approach, engaging with diverse power blocs, including BRICS, QUAD, and SCO, to safeguard its security and economic interests. Notable initiatives like the Vaccine Maitri program during the COVID-19 pandemic have reinforced India’s image as a responsible and ethical actor in global health diplomacy. Regionally, policies like Neighbourhood First and Act East reflect India’s focus on fostering connectivity, development, and cooperation while counterbalancing rival powers such as China. India’s strategic investments in West and Central Asia, including the Chabahar Port project, demonstrate its ambition to strengthen trade routes and assert influence across Eurasia. On the multilateral front, India’s active participation in forums like the G20 and International Solar Alliance showcases its commitment to shaping global norms on sustainable development and climate action. Militarily, India balances deterrence and defence modernization with a doctrine of responsible use of force. Overall, India’s evolving foreign policy combines ancient wisdom with strategic pragmatism, positioning it as a rule-shaping power advocating inclusive, value-based global leadership.
