Abstract

This study talks about the Senkaku dispute which has remained a fraught issue between Japan and China and also involved the U.S. This dispute is between China and Japan but has evinced the possibility of involving US into its fold. It delves into how the US shapes its policy towards Senkaku, keeping in mind its larger interests involved in the region. Japan is a major ally of US in the East Asian region, serving its strategic as well as economic interests; and US is under alliance obligation to assist it in case of any conflict between Japan and China. Besides, the US has to take into consideration its economic interests with China, particularly because of trade relations with China which also assists US in its economic revival. As such, this article analyzes how US has conducted itself vis-a-vis its stand on Senkaku dispute so that the US’ strategic and economic interests in East Asian region is preserved without harming its relations both with Japan and China.
