Rice - wheat cropping system is commonly practiced in the state of Punjab. Rice root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne graminicola Golden and Birchfield), a nematode of rice has been reported infesting wheat crop in Punjab and some other states in rice-wheat rotation areas. Though the impact of M. graminicola on rice has been well established, with reported yield losses, but less is known about the role on wheat crop. The present studies were conducted for three years by collecting root and soil samples from the different fields of the state in the cropping season and evaluating wheat varieties for resistance against M. graminicola in the nematode infested soil under pot culture conditions. The incidence of the nematode was recorded from Sarihan, Ajitwal, Rampura Phul, Jodhpur Cheema, Goraya, Phagwara, Karimpura, Salora, Mandiali, Chakmajra, Banga, Kotla, Sanghol, Mudaki, Sahejada, Harchowal and Mahadipura villages. Root knot nematode galling were observed on wheat roots in the fields when the temperature was higher. Out of two hundred and forty varieties none was found resistant. All were either susceptible or highly susceptible.
