Abstract

In all, 42 land races of rice (Oryza sativa) had a broad spectrum ofresistance against seven genetically/pathologically diverse pathotypes of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae causing bacterial blight of rice in Punjab. Marker assisted surveying of these genotypes carried out with available sequence tagged site (STS) markers MP, xa13 gene specific and pTA248 closely linked to BB resistance genes, namely, Xa4, xa13 and Xa21 revealed that 69 per cent of landraces carried Xa4 while none of them had xa13 and Xa21. Since Xa4 alone is not effective against all the pathotypes of X oryzae pv. oryzae, the germplasm evaluated here may be carrying additional known/novel genes and/or modifiers.
