Physiological studies on Ustilaginoidea virens causing false smut of rice
Abstract
Effect of different carbon, nitrogen sources and temperatures on mycelial growth of Ustilaginoidea virens was studied. The mycelial growth of isolates of U. virens on basal medium varied with different carbon, nitrogen sources and at different temperatures. Maximum mycelial growth of all the isolates was observed on sucrose as compared to dextrose, maltose and glycerol. The isolates showed significantly better growth on all the four nitrogen sources viz., sodium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, asparagine and leucine as compared to control. All tested isolates had more growth on sodium nitrate as compared to other nitrogen sources. Among different temperatures tested, maximum growth (57.74mg) was noticed at 25 ± 2°C followed by 30 ± 2°C (56.84mg).
