Indian power system is expanding at high rate with present installed capacity of about 1,64,000 MW. Power demand is expected to further increase to about 220 GW by 2017. With the quantum jump in system size, there are further requirement imposed by Regulatory Regime, Deregulated energy market, consumer aspiration for quality and reliable power supply. All these requirements with manifold increase in complexity of Grid Operation, necessitates dynamic monitoring of parameters.
Recent developments in real time monitoring using Wide Area Measurement (WAMS) pave the way to handle these challenges. This paper covers the design considerations for WAMS technology using PMU (Phasor measurement Units) suitable for Indian Power System.
