Abstract

This paper shares the challenges of early detection of evolving faults in LT systems and the application of Insulation Monitoring Devices (IMD's) and best industry practices to transmission or distribution station of critical importance. The advantages involve reduction of down time in addition to man & machine safety.

The principle is as well very effective in preventive fire safety by identification of evolving faults before actual incidence of failure event.

The paper is an outcome of methods and experience gained from successful installation of IMD's at 230 kV INDOOR GIS Station for BHAVINI-KALPAKKAM-Nuclear Power plant and presents the subject in holistic manner.

In a critical installation like 230 kV INDOOR GIS for BHAVINI-KALPAKKAM-Nuclear Power plant, reliability of LT auxiliary system is essential for un-interrupted running of power plants. Unscheduled downtimes of plants mean a considerable cost factor. Early detection of insulation faults is needed to prevent failures of plant and thus ensure a better operating reliability and plant safety.
