Abstract

This paper presents an approach for the validation and customization of generic models for static var compensator (STATCOM) based on operational disturbances captured by Disturbance Recorder (DR) at the respective substations where these devices are installed. In Rajasthan Renewable Energy (RE) Complex, DR data recorded in real-time during system disturbances at the Substations where Static Var Compensator’s (STATCOM) are installed are used for validation of generic models. By using the site DR data as a simulation input to the model, the response of the model is compared with the response of actual STATCOM device installed at site. A passivity based STATCOM control (Passivity-based control or PBC is a popular method for synthesizing stabilizing controllers) system is incorporated in the generic control to ensure transient stability during weak network condition and to achieve good agreement between the simulated and measured response of the device. DR data is compared with PSCAD model simulation data. The initial models used in this process are generic models for STATCOM and customized with respect to project specific parameters and further tuned to closely match with DR data. The customized generic STATCOM model can be further used for fault scenarios to be simulated in future STATCOM deployment in RE complex for RE interaction studies.
