Abstract

Condition Monitoring of transmission substation equipment / systems still remains through conventional and traditional way of manual patrolling which is depended on observational and analytical skills of the patrolling teams. This methodology had various limitations which includes high cost for patrolling activities (substation rounds), limited accuracy of fault detection and higher cycle times due to limited system information availability. It is necessary to provide timely monitoring of electrical substations and give proactive alarms to prevent failures and avoid costly outages.

In a first of its kind implementation in India, the team has successfully designed and implemented remote monitoring of Extra High Voltage (EHV) substations through Robotics, augmented reality, virtual reality and artificial intelligence. Robot automatically carries out the condition monitoring rounds, record observations, annunciates critical alarms and creates multiple useful asset monitoring reports. This paper shares Tata Power’ implementation methodology and its experience in successful site implementations.
