Abstract

Swiss Chard (Beta vulgaris var. cicla) is leafy vegetable whose leaves and leaf stalks are used as cooked vegetable and also as raw vegetable. Its cultivation as fresh vegetable and seed production both are successful in mid hills conditions of Uttarakhand. Harvesting of edible leaves of Swiss chard begins after 75 days of sowing. At harvesting stage plant is 55 cm. in height and 37 X 38 cm. in spread. Average leaf length and breadth noted to be 39 cm. and 15 cm. respectively. Fresh yield recorded to be 105 q/h where as seed yield noted to be 690 kg/h. Harvesting of seeds was done after 194 days of sowing.
