Abstract

Thirteen genotypes of opium poppy viz; UOP-57, UOP-83, UOP-74, UOP-34, UOP-43, UOP-44, UOP-53, UOP-60, UOP-78, MPO-9, IC-42, Chetak Aphim and MOP-540 were grown in randomized block design with three replications, in a four row plot of three meters length, having 30 x 10 cms row to row and plant to plant distance at Instructional Farm, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Udaipur, during rabi 2007–08. Variability parameters, correlation and path analysis for latex yield, seed yield and their contributing traits were analyzed by growing thirteen diverse genotypes of opium poppy. All the genotypes showed significant differences among themselves for all the traits except number of effective capsule/plant. The higher magnitude of genotypic coefficient of variation and phenotypic coefficient of variation was recorded for stem diameter, seed yield and latex yield. High heritability coupled with high genetic gain was observed for stem diameter, latex yield and seed yield which indicated the importance of additive gene effect for these traits, which are likely to respond to direct selection. Latex yield was significantly and positively correlated with husk yield while Seed yield was significantly and positively correlated with husk yield and negatively correlated with days to 50% flowering. The partitioning of genotypic association of latex yield revealed maximum direct contribution from husk yield, seed yield, number of effective capsules per plant and stem diameter. Therefore, husk yield, seed yield, number of effective capsule/plant and stem diameter should be given importance during selection.
