Abstract

Nutrition is a basic human need and is a prerequisite of a healthy life. A proper diet is essential from the very early stages of life for growth, development and active life. By creating awareness through training, demonstration and timely interaction, women can contribute to health, nutrition and better gardening practices. Vegetables grown in the nutrition garden which are available and within the reach of common man, can be selected to formulate nutritionally adequate diets therefore nutrition gardens were established in different villages to encourage farm families for the development of nutrition gardens and to utilize the nutrition garden produce by the members of their family. Results revealed that the total production of vegetables was 2773.00 kg in kharif 2008 season, rabi 2008–09 (3976.00 kg) while during kharif 2009, the total vegetable yield was 2848 kg among selected families. The more production of tomato, radish, carrot and chilli in the season encouraged the women to prepare tomato chutney and pickles to serve the families in off season.
