Influence of calcium and shrink packaging on physical attributes of plum

Department of Fruit Science, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana-141004, Punjab, India

Abstract

Plum is a climacteric fruit and is highly perishable in nature. It has very short post-harvest life so, it is very difficult to store it for longer period. An attempt was made to enhance the shelf-life of plum cv. Satluj Purple using the calcium compounds and shrink film packaging. Healthy fruits of plum cv. Satluj Purple were harvested and treated with calcium chloride (1%, 2% and 3%) and calcium nitrate (2%). treated fruits were subjected to shrink film packaging in packed treatments (T4, t5, t6, t8 and t9) and in unpacked treatments (t1, t2, t3, t7 and t10), fruits were kept in corrugated fibre board (CFB) boxes and stored at low temperature (0–1°C and 90–95% RH) for 40 days. Some physical parameters like fruit color and pulp stone ratio were evaluated at 10 days interval. Results revealed that fruits treated with calcium chloride @ 2% + shrink film packaging showed a delay in loss of green color and maintained the maximum pulp:stone during 40 days of storage.
