Abstract

Cole crops are also known as low volume high value crops. These are rich source of vitamins and minerals. Besides this they also contain phytonutrients having strong antioxidant potential, which can be helpful in management of oxidative stress and age related human ailment. So, increase in cole crop production can help to improve the nutritional food security. Four vegetables, viz, Broccoli, Red Cabbage, Cauliflower and Chinese Cabbage were evaluated under protected cultivation structures (glass house, poly house, polycarbonate house, open field covered with colored plastic mulches) and open field in randomized block design with three replications at Defence Institute of Bio Energy Research (DIBER), Pithoragarh (Uttarakhand). In view of the experimental results obtained during the investigation, highest yield was recorded in protected cultivation structures than in open field for Broccoli, Red Cabbage, Cauliflower and Chinese Cabbage. The cultivation of these vegetables has special significance in horticulture because of their short duration, low volume and high value. The cultivation of these vegetables will prove a boon to small and marginal farmers of the country and especially helping the farmers of the hilly regions in fetching remunerative prices of their produce.
