Abstract

New crosses were evaluated in adenium, a popular ornamental pot plant for novel traits and stability. Hybridization in adenium was done involving seven parents (four germplasm as female viz., Harry Potter (HP), Picottee (P), Arrogant (A), Sudarshan (S) and three germplasm as male viz., Deang Udam Sap (DUS), Double Sweet Heart (DSH), Vithoons White (VW) and their crosses were studied where in, the crosses that appeared novel were further multiplied by grafting and evaluated along with their parent varieties for stability for three consecutive years.

Among all the twelve germplasms including crosses and parents, three crosses viz., NAHPDSH3 (HP X DSH) and NAHPDSH1(HP X DSH) along with one variety as parent i.e DSH have been identified for doubleness, NAHPDSH1 (HP X DSH), NAPVW1 (P X VW) and one parent DUS for large flower size (8-9 cm) and NASDUS2 (S X DUS) and NAPVW1(P X VW) for more flowers per cluster habit (8.11) that were stable as three years of observation. Further, novel flower traits with regard to flower colour like deep purplish pink petal colour with the red colour streak and vivid purplish red petal margin in NAHPDSH3, pale purplish pink petal colour with a pink coloured streak and vivid purplish pink petal margin in flowers of NAHPDSH1(HP X DSH), vivid red petal colour with deep red petal margin in NASDUS2 (S X DUS), white petal colour with strong purplish red petal margin in NAPVW1(P X VW), deep purplish pink petal colour with vivid red petal margin, in NAADUS2(A X DUS) were also stable. These germplasms can be further exploited for commercial application as well as for breeding work in the floriculture industry.
