The trend of research communications was analysed on the basis of papers published during 1974–83 in a top cited Indian journal (Journal of the Indian Potato Association). It was observed that 75% literature was published jointly, 2–3 authorship, 75% literature was generated in 4 northern states and 70% articles were published by the CPRI, Simla scientists and 54% literature was generated in plant pathology and agronomy disciplines. Over 50% of the manuscripts were published within 3–12 months of their submission. The nature and type of communications, pattern of authorship, distribution of research communications and time gap in publication, etc. have been discussed.
