The productivity of potato in the Gangetic plains of West Bengal has increased appreciably during the last few years, due to the availability of modem varieties of potato as well as other crops grown in sequence with potato. To keep up the progress, there is need for timely supply of good seeds. Long term experiments carried out in potato-based cropping sequence of 300% intensity revealed that potato should be adequately fertllzed with N, P and K. Direct application of FYM to potato Increase the productivity of potato to the maximum in the system, its cumulative effect on potato yield is also maximum. The subsequent crops following pototo viz. jute, mung (Green gram), rice, maize etc. need not be fertilised with P and K except applicalon of the recommended doses of nitrogen to individual crops in the system. Avenues of adequate incorporation of organic matter in the system, which appeared to be very important to keep up the productivity of potato, need to be very seriously looked into.
