Field experiments conducted at Shimla (April to October 1978–82) revealed that the losses in the three varieties, viz. Kufri Chandramukhi, Kufri Jyoti and Kufri Sindhuri, due to current year infection of PVX or PVY varied between 11 & 17% and 36 to 48%. In the second year the PVX or PVY infected plants yielded 17 to 24% and 40 to 58% less than control. In the third year, yield depressions were 29 to 36% and 45 to 61%.
The rate of degeneration in Kufri Jyoti at Shimla due to PVX alone was 15, 36 and 52% in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year. On the other hand infection of PVY alone was only 3, 6 and 11% in the seed exposed for 1, 2 and 3 years.
