Under Tarai conditions Kufri Badshah showed its superiority in respect of vegetative growth, greater size of tubers as well as final yield. It also produced good number of tubers. JH 222, a new culture proved quite promising since it produced lesser vegetative growth, more number of tubers per plant and highest yield/ha. Kufri Chandramukhi, a short duration released variety could not compete with new cultures. Kufri Sindhuri, on the other hand, maintained its performance and produced vigorous vegetative growth and highest number of tubers per plant. However, it was slightly inferior to JH 222 and Kufri Badshah in yield potential. JI 5857, a short duration culture yielded lesser than Kufri Badshah, but greater than Kufri Chandramukhi. It had lesser number of tubers per plant. Significant differences were recorded for the T.S.S., ascorbic acid, per cent nitrogen, crude protein and dry matter in the tubers of various cultures. Ultimus contained higher T.S.S. and dry matter while Kufri Badshah contained highest amount of ascorbic acid. Amongst short duration cultures G 2524 was superior with respect to tuber shape, T.S.S., ascorbic acid content and dry matter.
