Effect of planting and harvesting dates on mineral composition of potatoes

Abstract

In a 2 - year field experiment conducted at Kanke, Ranchi, in rabi season, potato tubers obtained from 30th October planting contained more phosphorus, calcium, iron, manganese and copper as compared to other dates of planting. Highest value of potash was however, observed under 15th November planing. Delay in harvesting invariably led to decrease in potash and calcium contents but marked ircrease in phosphorus, iron, manganese and copper contents. Kufri Sindhuri tubers were definitely more nutritious than Kufri Chandramukhi tubers when their phosphorus, potash, calcium, iron, manganese and copper contents were considered. All the mineral contents except potash were found to be significantly and positively correlated with tuber yield in both the cultivars. Furthermore, Kufri Sindhuri appeared to be better cultivar in both yield and quality view points.
