Heterosis for yield and other traits in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.)*

Abstract

Through a line × tester model, 72 hybrid progenies were developed and hetrosis over better parent was estimated for eight different traits in F1 seedling end F1C1 tuber generations. The range of heterosis was observed to the minimum extent of −33.2 to 30.9% in F1 seedling and −33.92 to 37.7% in F1C1 tuber generation for number of leaves on the main shoot and maximum for tuber yield per plant to the extent of 2.0% to 174% in F1 seedling and −14.3 to 249.5% in F1C1 tuber generation. The cross combinations showing high hetrosis did not show high values of SCA and ranking on the basis of heterotic response was not followed by ranking based on SCA effects. Therefore, for selecting high yielding genotypes heterosis per se or phenotypic performance of a hybrid was found to be more realistic than SCA values. Hybrid combination Kufri Jeevan × Kufri Safed (T × A) and EX/A-689 × Dekama (A × T) were found to be the best which may be suitable for heterosis breeding in potato.
