Abstract

Effectiveness of 5-fluorouracil as sterilant in potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) was determined. Maximum sterility induced by feeding 0.5. and 1% 5-fluorouracil to both the sexes for 24 hours was 23 and 37.6 per cent respectively. Histological studies revealed that in the ovarioles of treated females, the follicular epithelium was broken hindering the yolk deposition. Besides, the treatments also caused contraction of ooplasm in the oocytes.
