In a field experiment conducted during 1984–85 at Kalyani, (West Bengal) application of Goal at 0.83 l/ha and Lasso at 3.0 l/ha, pre-emergence controlled weeds and consequently produced higher tuber yield over others. Buctril at 2.0 l/ha as post emergence was less effective in controlling weeds, but at 3.0 l/ha, it was quite effective. Best control of grass weeds was found by pre-emergence application of Stomp at 2.0 l/ha, sedge weeds by Goal and Basagram at 1.5 l/ha and broad leaved weeds by Lasso at 3.0 l/ha. None of the herbicidal treatments were as effective as hand weeding (twice) in increasing tuber yield.
