Potato response to zinc as influenced by genetic variability*

Abstract

Field and pot experiments were conducted on alluvial soils at Kartarpur (Punjab), to evaluate the response of eight potato cultivars/hybrids to zinc application at the rate of 0 and 8 kg/ha. Under field conditions, significant and highest yield response (19.5%) to zinc was recorded in Kufri Alankar followed by Kufri Chandramukhi (15.4%) and Kufri Sheetman (14.6%). In pot culture, besides above three cultivars, V.B.8, Kufri Sindhuri, Kujri Jyoti also showed some response to zinc. Kufri Chamatkar and SLB/Z-569 did not respond both in the feild and pot studies. Zinc increased Zinc concentration in leaves and tubers and its uptake by the tubers. The dry matter content of the tubers was not affected by zinc application.
