Abstract

Raising potatoes by use of true potato seed at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur over the past seven years indicated that a number of TPS progenies, particularly hybrid populations as transplants gave comparable or superior performance against the improved European varieties. The yield levels in some of the open-pollinated progenies were encouraging. Several progenies were phenotypically uniform for foliage and tuber characters. Seedling tubers derived from adapted TPS progeneis both hybrid and open-pollinated gave higher yield of tubers compared to once-grown imported seed of standard varieties. Extensive on-farm trials conducted during 1984–85 to 1987 confirmed research findings. Induction of flowering and berry set under low-land tropics was significantly improved by extra illumination of 5 hours and manipulation of soil-plant environment.
