The technological gap and proudction potential of potato farming was adjudged in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh during agricultural year 1986–87, employing a two-stage simple random sample of 150 farmers. The cost of production per quintal of potato was worked out to be Rs. 118. The study concluded that existing net profit of Rs. 8,514 per hectare could be increased to Rs. 15,609 if recommended package of practices is adopted. The maximum technological gap of 62 per cent was observed in the use of fertilizers. In the study area, working capital was the most crucial input and one rupee spent on it would fetch additional returns worth Rs. 2.18 on sampled farms.
