Experiments were conducted at the Potato Research Centre of Bangladesh to develop suitable techniques for raising TPS seedlings in nursery using five growing media, five nitrogen levels and five shading periods. Five different growing media (M1–M5) were evaluated and the best media determined, nitrogen at the rate of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 g per 10 kg in growing media M5 and five different shading periods were tested.
Of all the growing media tested the mediam M5 consisting of soil sand and FYM in the proportion of 1:1:1 by volume was found equally good with the medium M3, consisting of soil and FYM in the proportion of 1:1. The application of nitrogen at the rate of 5g per 10 kg in the growing medium M5 was found to be optimum. Shading of the seedling/nursery with bamboo mats, covered with polythene for one week starting from the date of seeding increased the fresh and dry weight of TPS seedlings significantly but shading beyond two weeks decreased fresh and dry weight of TPS seedling greatly.
