Weed bio-mass in relation to irrigation and mulching, and economics of mulching potato crop under conditions of acute water scarcity*

Abstract

In field experiments conducted under scarce water condition in eastern dry zone of Karnataka, density and dry weight of weeds were low with smaller depth of irrigation given at frequent intervals in potato crop grown during rabi season on red sandy loam soils. Use of polythene mulch resulled in higher grade-wise number and yield of tubers per plant. Mulching with straw or polythene resulled in reduction in weed bio-mass and consequently higher benefit. Paddy straw (ICBR 1: 4.1) was supertor to polylhene (ICBR 1: 1.3).
