Economics of seedling tubers production from true potato seed in different entries*

Abstract

An agronomic investigation on production of seedling tubers from tnle potato seed was carried-out at Regional Research Station of Central Maharashtra Plateau Zone. National Agricultural Research Project, Aurangabad (M.S.), India, during 1986–87 and 1987–88. The experiment consisted of 5 TPS families viz. TPS-2 (OP), TPS-7 (OP), HPS-I/13, HPS-7/III and HPS-1/III, laid-out in randomized block design, with 4 replications. On an average, 10 seed beds (30 sq m) were required to produce one quintal of seedling tubers and cost of their production was Rs. 497.9/q. Mean number and fresh weight of seedling tubers produced were 768 and 3417 g per sq m, respectively. TPS-7 (OP) required minimum area of 24.5 sq m followed by HPS-7/III to produce one quintal of seedling tubers (26.6 sq m). TPS-7 (OP) also produced maximum weight of seedling tubers (3988 g/m2) followed by HPS-7/III (3578 g/m2), however, the maximum number of seedling tubers were produced by the latter (991/m) than the former (936/m). It was estimated that for planting one hectare area, 4.91 quintal of seedling tubers of various sizes (0–5 g, 5–10 g, 10–20 g and above 20 g) were required costing Rs. 2460/-.
