Abstract

Studies were conduded to find out a suitable area for seed potato production in North-easlern hills region of India. The observations revealed that an area placed on the top of the hill at about 1950 to 2150 meters above mean sea level near Mao in Senapati district of Manipur was quite suitable for seed production. The data recorded for four consecutive years (1987 to 1990) on aphid vector population showed that average number of Myzus persicae (Sulzer) varied from 0.15 to 12.25 per 100 compound leaves, which is below the critical level of 20 aphids/100 leaves. The area was also free from bacterial wilt. potato tuber moth and other pathogens. None of the area in other states of the region was found suitable because of prevalence of aphid vectors and soil-borne pathogens.
