Fertilizer management in potato based cropping system II: Effect of residual and applied fertility on first succeeding crops of tomato and okra

Abstract

Tomato and okra were grown after harvest of potato to study the residual effect of fertilizers applied to the potato crop. Fertility levels given to the succeeding crops of tomato and okra were: no fertilizer, 25, 50 and 75% of the recommended dose of nitrogen without P and K and recommended dose of NPK. Higher NPK dose (33% higher than the recommended) applied previously to potato crop increased plant height, fruit, number and yield and NPK content of foliage and delayed flowering in the following crops of tomato and okra. However, zinc applied to potato crop increased plant height and fruit, number and yield butdid not influence NPK content of foliage and the days taken to flowering of tomato and okra. Application of 50–75% of the recommended nitrogen without P and K to the succeeding crops of tomato and okra, was enough to obtain fruit number and yield, statistically at par with recommended dose of NPK. N content of the foliage increased with increase in the dose of N given to tomato and okra, while P and K content of the foliage was not influenced by N application.
