Studies conducted for two years (1980–90) on slightly acidic soils of Shimla (palehumults) revealed that elemental S gave significantly higher tuber yields and nutrients uptake than (NH4)2 SO4 and CaSO4 in both the years. Optimum dose of S was found to be 36 kg/ha. The tuber yield at optimum S dose was 18.2 t/ha with (NH4)2SO4, 19.4 t/ha with CaSO4 and 23.4 t/ha with elemental sulphur. Application of S increased uptake of N (55.4%), P (43.5%) and S (80.2%). Its application increased the S content in potato leaves by 31.9 to 35.0%. Sulphur recovery was highest with elemental S (7.9%) followed by 3.4% with (NH4)2SO4 and CaSO4.
