Extensive surveys in 23 locations in Gwalior district, Madhya Pradesh revealed that popular Cvs. in the area were Kufri Jyoti and ‘Lal Aunkh’. Farmers generally did not produce own seed but procure fresh seed every time. Occurrence of soft rot, Sclerotium rot, mouldy rot and cut tuber decay was usual. Incidence of charcoal rot was very high in late (15th March onwards) harvested crops when temperature rose above 30°C, and slight negligence of late harvest resulted in heavy losses. Incidence of dry rot in freshly harvested and heaped tubers recorded during this study constitutes a new report.
