Performance of TPS progenies for ware Potato production in north-east hills.

Abstract

Sixteen hybrid TPS progenies were tested with one local OP and tuber crop of Kufri Jyoti during summer season (April-August) of 1991 and 1992 to select suitable TPS progenies for North-East hilly region. The survival of the transplanted seedlings in the field ranged from 82% to 93%. TPS progenies JTH/C 107 x OP-2, GB/A-9-120 x PH/F 1545, JTH/C 107 x OP-4 and JR-465 x CP-2289 were the best yielder and gave 19.5% 19.0% 8.8% and 5.1% higher yields, respectively than tuber crop of Kufri Jyoti. On an average these progenies gave the tuber production in the ratio of 14:60:26 of large (> 80g). medium (20-80g), small (< 20g) size tubers, respectively. The tuber planted crop of Kufri Jyoti gave significantly higher production of large size tubers where as, medium size tuber production was significantly higher with good yielding TPS progenies. Percentage of bacterial Wilt/field rottage and late blight incidence in crop raised through TPS progenies was conspicuously lower than the crop raised through seed tubers. Late blight disease build up in the TPS progenies was far lower than the tuber crop of Cv. Kufri Jyoti. TPS progenies tubers showed short dormancy period during storage, but higher weight loss and rottage was recorded in standard cultivars tuber.
