Combining ability in potato for some economic characters in 75 days crop*

Ninety populations involving 21 parents were developed according to line × tester (15 X 6) design. These were studied for plant vigour, per cent dry matter, tuber no./plot, average tuber weight and tuber yield in second and third clonal generations. The variances due to general and specific combining ability showed that non-additive component was predominant and additive variance was of little value for most of the characters. The good general combiners and promising cross combinations for various traits were identified. Superior cross combinations for yield, average tuber weight and tuber no. involved atIeast one good general combiner.
